How to Build an Off Grid Cabin for $5k – Live off the grid and build your own cabin. Here’s an awesome video of how to build your own off grid cabin for $5k. Lots of hard work went into building this cabin in the Canadian wilderness. Shawn James goes into detail about the tools and equipment, work and time involved and shares with us the cost of building this off grid log cabin, so you can get a good idea and help plan your own cabin build.
I’ve seen a lot of people online try to make off grid cabin building videos, some of them are good, some of them not so good. This cabin build video is by far the best out there. It’s probably also why it has over 5.9 million views. Shawn is very meticulous about building and doesn’t talk a whole lot, he just shows you by action how to do it.
The Off Grid Cabin
The log cabin itself is small and measures approximately 10×20 foot with a 100 square foot loft. And he built it with hand tools. No power tools were used to build the cabin.
All the materials for the cabin cost less than $5k total. Something like this is very doable for just about anyone with the knowledge and self discipline to make it work.
I would love to build something like this. This is what I’ll be doing. My off grid cabin will be approximately the same size, and height with a loft as well. My cabin will be in the Black Hills of South Dakota, far away from civilization as I possibly can. I want to build it close enough to town so if I wanted to spend an hour to run into town and resupply it wouldn’t be too far.
“The cabin is made of cedar fence posts, twelve feet long and the cabin measures 10 feet x 20 feet inside with a one hundred square foot sleeping loft on the second floor. The floor is made of two inch thick pine planks, torched to help repel water and to give them a rustic barn board appearance.” SOURCE: My Self Reliance
